Crew members of Goundar Shipping Limited (GSL) currently in Canada are undergoing  a familiarisation training on board their newest vessel.

And the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama who was in Vancouver last week commended the company for investing in their staff.

Mr Bainimarama met with GSL managing director and owner, George Goundar and his team.

Mr Goundar said: “The Prime Minister was very happy and impressed to see that our Fijian crew are given the chance to show the world that we have the skills to compete with the best.”

Mr Goundar said his crew would be trained until they were all familiar on how to operate their fifth vessel, MV Lomaiviti Princess V.

“They started training on Monday. We will be doing painting of the hull and other minor works while on dry dock.

“Our young engineers will be able to evaluate and enhance their knowledge more on the underwater parts of the vessel when it goes up the slipway,” he said.

The crew he said were happy to have had the chance to meet with the Prime Minister over a dinner organised by Fijians in Canada to celebrate Fiji Day.

So far he said the crew were enjoying the visit in Vancouver

“We are expecting the Fijian surveyors on the 26th of this month to carry out under water inspection and to inspect accommodation,” Mr Goundar said.

The crew were handpicked based on their qualifications, their work performance and commitment to the company.

For the more experienced crew members who are familiar with such deliveries, it was a good time to pass on first-hand knowledge to the younger crew members on board.

The vessel is expected to arrive on our shores on November 15 after a 15 day voyage.
