Twenty-six -year-old, Izaad Ali, says he is lucky to be alive after his car caught fire.

His Hybrid vehicle, which he bought three months ago, burst into flames while he was travelling along Nawaicoba in Nadi on Monday night.

The father of two said the incident happened at around midnight while he was returning from a wedding over the weekend.

“All I could say is that I am blessed to be alive considering the severity of the flames when it engulfed my car,” Mr Ali said.

“I was driving home that night when I heard a blow from the bonnet. I just parked the car and clambered, trying to run for safety and fortunately I managed to get out safely.

“As soon I got out, I tried to flee the scene and just a few metres away the car went up in flames.

“I am just thankful that I managed to escape without any injuries,” Mr Ali added.

Mr Ali said the car cost him over $20,000.

Police have confirmed that investigations continued as they await a report from the National Fire Authority.

A witness, Sanita Lewa, said they lived just two houses away from the place where the incident happened.

She has been staying in the area for the last nine years. Her husband works as a cane cutter.

“When we ran out to check it out, my husband noticed that a vehicle was in flames and people started to crowd the scene.

“The driver was just helplessly standing with a bottle of water in his hand,” she added.

“This is something new for us because it’s the first time for us to actually see a car burn.”

She said they were concerned for the driver and thankful that he escaped uninjured.
