Lautoka, Ba, Rewa and Suva in semi-finals

A new winner will be crowned at the 2017 Courts Interdistrict Championship in Churchill Park, Lautoka on Sunday.

This was after defending champions Labasa failed to qualify for the semi-final.

Hosts Design Engineering Lautoka will play  Rewa in the first semi-final on Saturday after Zibraaz Sahib sent Nadi goalkeeper Samuela Tamanisau the wrong way in the 1-0 win last night.

4R Electrical Ba will meet Smart Efficient Security Suva in the other semi-final with the ‘Men in Black’ looking the team to beat.

Lautoka only needed a draw to qualify but were made to look the less classy of the two teams with Nadi playing the better football on the night.

The Blues got the break after substitute Valerio Nawatu was crudely brought down in the box.

Sahib stepped up and made no mistake with the spot kick.

Blues coach Kamal Swamy said, “It was a tough match.”

Meanwhile,  Propeller Shaft Services Labasa were denied a semifinal spot at the eleventh hour when super sub Misaele Draunibaka equalised for Rewa  earning them a 1-1 draw.

Up until then Rewa were looking at catching the early bus home with Labasa leading 1-0.

The northerners wanted the game more than the Delta Tigers’ as the latter only needed a draw to qualify for the semi-final.

Labasa sensed they were in with a chance as their attacks were becoming more frequent.

However,  the equaliser shattered their hopes.

Rewa coach Marika Rodu said the game was tough.

“We needed a draw and Labasa needed a win. Labasa was hungrier in the first half and created more attack causing problem for us.”

Labasa coach Iosefo Vosaboto thanked the boys for playing their hearts out.

“Even though we scored only one goal in the tournament, as defending champions, we tried our best.”
