The United States of America is Fiji’s top export market. This was revealed by the United States Ambassador Judith Cefkin at the launch of the Fiji/US Business Council’s new logo at Tanoa Plaza in Suva on Thursday.

Ms Cefkin said that last year US consumers spent over US$200 million (FJ$410.4m) on Fijian goods and services.

In return they exported US$55 million (FJ$112.9m) worth of goods to Fiji.

“I see this strong connection only strengthening as Fiji’s economy continues to expand, with 3.8 per cent growth forecast this year,” she said.

The logo has the American bald eagle and the Fijian war club representing authenticity when combined.

“Fiji’s economic development provides a wide range of opportunities for local and foreign investment in infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, health services, energy and other sectors.

“We encourage American investors to explore the possibilities in Fiji, whether it is forming local partnerships, starting a business or expanding existing operations,” she added.

Ms Cefkin said the Fiji/US Business Council can be critical partner in this, and she encouraged closer co-operation.

She said she believes the council has strong potential to serve as an advocate. This means in addition to helping businesses individually and working collectively to improve the business climate.

“Council member companies have a wealth of experience on the process for registering businesses in Fiji and on tax regulations.

“That experience can work to the benefit of member companies, and the council has the potential to be a strong advisor to the government on ways to cut red tape and inefficiencies to further improve the overall business climate,” said Ms Cefkin.

She said she was very excited about what the future holds for US-Fiji trade and investment relations.

“Working together we can continue to grow the economic ties between the United States and Fiji, and support the development of an energetic business community.”

The council vice president, Michel El-Rahi, said the Fiji US Business Council focus going forward is to create opportunities for its members to be able to leverage off the networks and resources that the council has.

He also said they will also focus on providing a voice for the collective to highlight common concerns and interests and create awareness and understanding on the council’s intent and focus.

“The focus by the council to the areas identified also needed a change in branding to ensure that the council is not being pigeon-holed into “something from the past”, now and the future is what we aim to develop on.

“The council needed a fresh look of a new perspective, so the new logo was conceived.

“The symbol of the Bald Eagle and War Club is authentic and represents the combined, the strong relationship of the US and Fiji. In addition, it symbolises the strong outlook of the council’s goals and objectives.”

He said that the new image of the council represents its endeavours in establishing and strengthening a network of Fiji businesses that trade with businesses in the US.
