The Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort and Spa was a benchmark for setting standards for service and innovation as Fiji emerged as a world-class tourism destination.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said the resort has every reason to celebrate half a century of excellence in service.

Mr Bainimarama was chief guest at the 50th Anniversary celebrations of Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort and Spa yesterday.

“You have every reason to be proud of the benchmark you’ve set for our tourism industry, and I am certainly proud of your legacy.

“This beautiful property is far more than just a resort; it is a true piece of Fijian history.  Since those early days, your resort has not only been a proud fixture of our tourism industry, it has been a shining example of what a business can achieve.”

– The Resort has grown from 108 rooms to 442.

– It is home to five restaurants, a spa, three pools and most recent addition – Fiji’s largest inflatable water park – all combined, these facilities makes the resort, the largest single hotel in Fiji.

Partnership with communities

Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort and Spa partnership with the local communities in the Tikina of Cuvu was also commended.

Mr Bainimarama said their partnership has set a high standard for every operator in Fiji’s tourism industry.

“For decades, your resort has served as a model partnership between a business and a local community. You’ve shown how to create a win-win situation that benefits developers, ordinary Fijians and all of Fiji.”

Environment protection

As part of its Corporate and Social Responsibility, the hotel is serious about protecting the environment and raise awareness on environmental issues.

Mr Bainimarama said such initiatives compliment Government’s efforts on the domestic and international fronts to bring more awareness and action in protecting Fiji’s ecosystems, oceans and tackling climate change.

“You’ve done more than simply promote Fiji; you’ve played a big part in helping protect our environment today and for future generations.

Mr Bainimarama assured that Government would continue to support the development of the resort and the partnership with the Fijian people.

Director Kuok Meng Xiong, a third generation owner of the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort and Spa was certainly impressed to oversee what his grandfather had started 50 years ago.

“This is a very proud moment for the family, we are third generation to be involved with the Fijian (resort), my grandfather first came to Fiji and this was his first investment at that time,” he said.

“The beautiful thing is that we always have the strong support of our staff of who have known my grandfather, my uncle and now myself.

“These are the people that have made our resort famous with the Fijian hospitality.

“The 50th anniversaries is the real tribute to our colleagues here at the Fijian (resort) and the guests who have been to this resort for many years.”

On June, 25, 1966 the formal laying of a foundation stone for the first 36 of the 108 lagoon wing rooms was officiated by Sir Derek Jakeway, the last Governor of Fiji before Independence.

A year later on October 22, 1967 the resort was officially opened by Ratu George Cakobau, the Paramount Chief of the Kubuna Confederacy. Yesterday the resort celebrated its 50th Birthday as the Golden Lady in the Fijian tourism industry.
