The Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum is confident that Fiji can become the shipping hub of the Pacific.

He emphasised the need to position Fijian ports as a maritime and shipping centre of attraction.

Speaking at the bonus payout to staff of Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL) and its subsidiary company, Fiji Ships and Heavy Industries Limited, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said FPCL can operate similarly to Fiji Airways.

He publicly urged FPCL’s board to seriously start looking at the new port development.

“I think it is very, very important for us to be able to position Fiji. Fiji as you know is geographically a hub today. Like I said to you before, Fiji Airways flies to every single continent that rims the Pacific Ocean, except South America.”

The A-G said that level of footprint that Fiji Airways has, can be implemented in the ports and shipping sector.

“We would like ships to be able to come from different destinations and see Fiji as an attractive destination, to be able to fuel, to be able to offload their goods and than transhipped to other parts of the region, including Australia and New Zealand.”

Speaking to the FPCL board, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum emphasised the need to have a better port.

“You need to ensure that the new port development is actually implemented. We need to have a modern port. From government’s perspective, we need to have a port site where you don’t just have a fishing area where the fishing boats come, you have your cruise liner areas, you have you’re an area for commercial and industrial ships, you should have should have for ship repair and also ship building and all of them should be in alignment,” the A-G said.

“It’s a one stop service shop that should be available so that people don’t come to Fiji just because they want to come, but because we offer something that is unique, something that’s different.Wouldn’t it be great for us not only to offer slip services, but also dry docking for ship repair,” he added.
