Forty-seven-year old Vilimaina Takayawa finally accomplished her dream 24 years after graduating with a Diploma in Nursing in 1993.

Yesterday, she graduated at the Suva Sangam Hall, Suva, with her Bachelor of Nursing Science (Post Registration) through the Sangam Institute of Technology College of Nursing and Health Care Education.

Ms Takayawa is a senior nurse at the St Giles Hospital in Suva.

She said her dream to gain her degree in nursing was to motivate her two young children.

“At 47, I am overwhelmed to have a degree, something I had been dreaming about the last 24 years,” Ms Takayawa said.

“Every year, when universities’ programmes came out, I used to look out for the degree programme so I could pursue my degree and if possible further pursue my Post Graduate as well,” she said.

“When I found out that the Sangam Institute of Technology was offering the nursing bachelor’s degree, I signed up and did not look back,” she said.

She admitted that at first it was difficult for her to cope up with classes as she had to learn the basics of using computers.

“I was not familiar with a lot of new and big words. I did not know how to use a computer and we had to do the majority of our academics on computers,” she said.

“It was difficult that at times I felt like giving up. But I did not because I wanted to be a role model to my two children and show them that even at this age, I can achieve what I aim for.”

Ms Takayawa was one of the 64 nurses that graduated with a nursing degree yesterday.
