A couple in the West are now homeless after their home was destroyed in a fire over the weekend.

Saras Wati and her husband, Raj Pal of Korovuto in Nadi, had just moved into their home six months ago.

The incident happened at around 8.30pm last Friday.

57-year-old, Ms Wati who works as babysitter said her husband was at home when the incident happened.

She said they’ve lost $20,000 worth of belongings.

“I was returning from work when a taxi driver told me that my house was engulfed in fire,” she said.

“I ran out of the taxi and stood there helplessly as I watched. The first thing I did was try to look for my husband because he is sick and thank God he was safe.”

The couple had been residing in Lomolomo outside Nadi.

Her husband, a 68-year-old farmer, said he was outside their house attending to something when the incident happened.

“I noticed smoke coming out of the house, it was flames coming from under the bed but by that time I couldn’t do anything,” Mr Pal said.

“I want to thank the firefighters for their quick response; even though everything was destroyed in the fire they still managed to reach here just a few minutes after we called them.

“We are staying in the rural area but they still managed to get here on time,” Mr Pal said.

Police confirmed that the report was lodged to them on Saturday.

Police spokesperson Jokatama Qio said they would continue with investigations once the National Fire Authority investigations were completed.

He said they had contacted the family and that there was no suspicion of arson being involved.
