A clip of a group of students smoking in uniform at the Suva Bus Stand has been viewed by 890 people as of yesterday afternoon and shared on other media sites, Instagram and Twitter.

The clip of the group from a prominent school in Suva was caught on camera and posted on social media.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the Fiji Police had not received any official report of the video that was uploaded on Facebook on Wednesday.

“This will be an issue covered by our officers during awareness,” Ms Naisoro said.

“We would have appreciated it more if those who saw this happening had alerted our officers at the Market Post,” she said.

Ms Naisoro said the police counseled students if they received a report and it was a way of addressing the issue.

“If we receive reports of students smoking in their uniforms we speak to the students and their parents are called in,” Ms Naisoro said.

“We would often receive information of students smoking and have counselled both the students as well as going to the respective schools.”

She said the Fiji Police would be visiting schools in all four divisions over the remaining days of the school year.

“The Commissioner of Police has directed officers to visit schools over the remaining days of the school year to talk about the need to stay away from a life of crime and indulging in these forms of activities, this is for all divisions,” she said.

She urged parents to speak to their children as they had a vital role in keeping children away from indulging in activities such as smoking cigarettes.

“Again we ask members of the public that if they come across an incident involving children let us know or speak to them as we all have a role to play,” she said.

“This is to make sure our children are kept away from indulging in these activities.”

The principal of the group of students said he could not comment on the issue.
