The Tongan national men and women’s rugby 7s team are raring to go in the Oceania Sevens Rugby Championship which gets underway at the ANZ Stadium, Suva today.

Tongan 7s manager Filokalafi Akauola said they’re going to take one game at a time.

“To qualify for the Sevens World Cup is a huge step for us of which we are very positive we can take on,” Akauola said.

“To qualify from the Oceania region is huge since this is the home of two of the world’s greatest nations in sevens rugby, which is Fiji and New Zealand.

We are very fortunate to take them on and we are always positive.”

The Tongan men are in Pool C where they face Australia and the much-improved Solomon Islands while the women take on Samoa, Australia and the Fiji Airways Fijiana.

The two-day tournament features 13 teams in the men’s competition and 8 in the women’s. Powerhouses Fiji, New Zealand, Australia and Samoa are all competing.

The championship is a qualifying tournament for the 2018 Hong Kong Sevens tournament, the 2018 Rugby Sevens World Cup and the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

The qualifying excludes Fiji, New Zealand, Australia and Samoa.
