It was an overwhelming yet emotional moment for the Australian women 7s team after their visit to Ballantine Memorial School in Delainavesi, Lami yesterday.

The students of BMS performed a ‘meke’ and sang Fijian traditional songs which their visitors thoroughly enjoyed.

Co-captain Sharni Williams was thrilled to have made the visit on the eve of the Oceania Sevens Championship which starts at the ANZ Stadium, Suva today.

The Aussies are the defending Oceania champions

“It feels absolutely amazing to come and visit the students of BMS and it has definitely touched us quiet a lot especially to see, learn their culture and their way of life,” Williams said.

“And to also be aware of how these girls can be influenced with what we are doing and probably be interested to play rugby as well.

“We are definitely setting a pathway for these women and the next generation of women in Fiji.

“However, most of these girls come from villages and their school has become their family.

“I can actually relate that to my own team who I travel with to compete in various tournaments.

“Obviously, as defending champions I am overwhelmed with what the side has achieved over the years and we are hopeful to defend our title this year and play some good footy and enjoy ourselves.

“I am looking forward to the tournament and love playing against the Fijian girls.

“This makes me even more proud to play in a foreign country.

“The school visitation has really made us happy so definitely we will take something out and be ready to deliver our best performance at the Oceania Sevens.

“I would like to thank BMS for having us and I believe our presence will give them an opportunity and encouragement to pursue a career in seven’s rugby.”
