Veteran coach believes Fiji can host a World Sevens Series tournament

Samoa 7s head coach Sir Gordon Tietjens believes Fiji Airways 7s head coach Gareth Baber would deliver positively in this 2017/18 Sevens World Series.

Tietjens says, any new coach should deliver results during their second year.

“It takes awhile for a coach to grow with the country they are coaching,” he said.

“Their first year is all about finding out about players, second year is getting to know them even better and you will see some good performances from Baber.

“He is a very good coach.”

Tietjens applauded the idea of Fiji hosting a leg in the World Sevens Series.

“Fiji is capable of hosting a leg of World Sevens Series as it’s a 7s nation,” he said.

Tietjens was impressed with the unbeaten performance from his players who walloped Vanuatu 40-0, Tuvalu 50-0, Tonga 22-7 and Papua New Guinea 31-14 in their final pool match to seal their place in today’s Cup quarterfinal stage.

“I’m happy with our last game.  We got to be tested and we were not tested in the first two games,” he said.

Tietjens says Oceania Sevens Championship is a great platform to prepare for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

The Samoan side made an impressive start thumping Vanuatu 40-0 in their first game at the ANZ Stadium, Suva yesterday.

Tietjens said despite their win they will need to improve and focus on their combination.

“Our aim is to do extremely well in this tournament and improve our performance in each game.

“Most of our players are contracted and they will obviously play in the first leg of the World Sevens Series in Dubai and Cape Town in South Africa.

“We still need to work on our combinations and understanding each other.

“We played well at the Silicon Valley Sevens last weekend. The Commonwealth Games is our next big focus.

“We have two evenly balanced teams who have gained a lot of experience playing in tournament overseas.”
