The New Zealand women’s 7s team won the Oceania Rugby Sevens Championship women’s final with a 12-5 win over Australia at the ANZ Stadium, Suva last night.

A good start for the Black Ferns as they were able to play a good structured rugby on a slippery ground conditions controlling possessions well.

The Sarah Goss captained- side scored their first try through Ruby Tui and converted by Tyla Nathan- Wong. The Black Ferns continued their dominance and scored their second try through Gayle Broughton and led 12-0 at half time.

The Australians fought back in the second half but continuously lot possession. The Aussies managed to score their lone try through Evania Pelite.

Goss believes it was a good start for this season.

“The girls have been doing well during the pre-season and it showed tonight,” she said.

“The field was slippery for us but luckily we came back. Now we’re feeling good about going to Dubai.”

Australian captain Sharni Williams said they have tested themselves well.

“We brought in two new girls for this tournament and they performed well. The wet condition really affected our performance, it was a tough game. We had possessions but we lost it.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s side finished in third place after thumping Papua New Guinea 39-0.
