The Suva Rugby Referees Association has directed their focus in turning up the ante, preparing and developing their match officials for future major tournaments and overseas duties.

Association president Joe Vakatavitavi said this was influenced by their recent selection in being the sole provider of match officials for the upcoming Raka Sevens tournament.

“This is a big challenge for us and we also like to expose our young referees in these big tournaments also we want to go there as well prepared as we can be,” Vakatavitavi said.

He said the participation of their young referees’ in such big tournaments encouraged development and growth for themselves as an individual, at the same time marketing the capabilities of local referees on the international regional scale.

“We have pathways too for referees both locally and the Oceania region, right up to the international level.”

As part of their preparation, they had begun with training their members on a daily basis for the past two weeks at the John Wesley College grounds in Raiwaqa.

Vakatavitavi highlighted as part of their development pathway, two of their referees are currently involved in a workshop being conducted by Oceania Rugby.

Some of their match officials were part of the supporting match officials group in yesterday’s Oceania Rugby Sevens Championship that was held at the ANZ Stadium in Laucala Bay, Suva.
