DAV Girls College student Losena Seru walked away with the top prize for the Korean Speaking Competition at the Grand Pacific Hotel (GPH) in Suva on Friday.

The 15-year-old Lamiti native from Gau was lost for words when her name was announced as the winner of the competition.

“I have always been interested in watching Korean movies and today is a stepping stone for me. Fiji is a multicultural country and we need to learn different languages,” Losena said.

This is the third Korean Speaking contest organised by the Korean Embassy.

“I worked with my Korean teacher for one week and learning Korean was interesting and awesome,” she said.

Her teacher, Min Jun Lee said she was impressed with Losena the first day she met her.

“When I met Losena for the first time the first thing she did was said hello in Korean and it is heart warming to be in another country and someone to speak to you in your language,” Ms Lee said

Losena’s mother, Akanisi Kulamailagi said she was proud of her daughter’s achievement.

“Whenever she watches Korean movies I always tell her to turn it off but today I have seen her achievement and it has changed my mind set,” Ms Kulamailagi said.

“I am so happy that no words can describe how I feel. I have called her father and told him the news and he is very happy.”

Winners: First prize: Losena Seru; Second prize: Aisea Fatiaki; Third prize: Merewalesi Yabakidua Monomono.
