The Lautoka women’s football team did well in the first round of the Vodafone Women’s Senior League competition that got underway at Nadi Sangam Primary School ground last Saturday.

Lautoka won 3-2 against Nadi and their first goal came from the boots of captain, Asena Ratu in the 20th minute before striker Emali Talei extended their lead to 2-0 in the 42nd minute. Nadi fought back and Kini Tora reduced the deficit to 2-1 when she scored in the 62nd minute before Emeri Nai leveled the scores at 2-2 in the 73rd minute. But it was Lautoka’s Ratu who led by example when she slotted the winning goal in the 76th minute.

Lautoka women’s football manager Maria Nalulu said they had worked hard and are now preparing for their next match.

“Though we did not have our key goalkeeper Vasiti Gibson, who was out representing Fiji in the Oceania 7s, my girls performed well,” she said.

“For our next game, we’ll work on our finishing and the weakness we have seen in this game, we’ll try to improve on it.”

Nadi football coach Amina Hussein said they had fielded a young team.

‘We’ll bring our top players in the next match against Tavua but I’m happy with our performance against Lautoka as we played against a much senior team,” she added.
