Some of the world’s heavyweights have arrived in Bonn, Germany and pledged their support of the Fijian presidency of COP23.

COP23 president Voreqe Bainimarama met business magnate and philanthropist Michael Bloomberg, one of the world’s top 10 richest people.

Attorney-General and leader of the Fijian delegation Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum met the Terminator, movie star and former Californian governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Mr Bloomberg, the former New York mayor and media mogul (worth US$47.8 billion), said despite the US stance on climate change, America would make the Paris Agreement goals, driven by the private sector and local government.

The US and 120 other countries signed the Paris Agreement in 2016.

But US President Donald Trump said he would pull America out of the agreement.

Mr Bloomberg said whatever Mr Trump did was beside the point.

He said it was the local government and private industry that had led the way on climate change.

Mr Schwarzenegger has also spoken out against Mr Trump’s position and outlined the positive developments in California because of their climate change measures.

California Governor Jerry Brown is also in Bonn to support Mr Bainimarama as he promised.
