NTPC director Isimeli Tagicakiverata said: “Food safety is a worldwide issue of trade. It has become of crucial importance for the food industry both for the manufacturing and service sector of any country.”

He said Food Safety Management System issues arise from lack of awareness which can be resolved by changing the mindset of workers.

“A change in the mindset of workers and managers alike, including the wider community is very important, for without this it is difficult to sustain improvement activities.

“The core value of such a quality mindset is that it always makes us to want to better ourselves in terms of our knowledge, skills, discipline, efforts and teamwork.”

Background

The Food Safety Management System (FSMS) provides a preventative approach to identify, prevent and reduce food-borne hazards.

This is to minimise the risk of food poisoning and to make food safe for consumption.

A well designed FSMS with appropriate control measures can help food establishments comply with food hygiene regulations and ensure that food prepared for sale is hygienic and safe for consumers.
