We have been playing together for years now and we need to improve our ranking, says Ana Maria Roqica

The Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team aim to better their ranking when the 2017/18 Women Sevens Series kicks off in Dubai this weekend.

Team captain Ana Maria Roqica says the team need to improve from their fourth placed ranking.

And this means they have to reach the Cup semifinal and if they lose, they have to win the 3rd place playoff

“We have a lot of old players who have worked hard to get the nod,” she said at Nadi International Airport yesterday.

“There is only one new inclusion in Vasiti Solikoviti who is really good.

“We have been playing together for years now and we need to be at our best because we have a tough pool in Dubai.

The Fijiana are in Pool C with Canada, Ireland and Spain.

“We are currently ranked fourth but we aim to be in the top three.

“We just finished with the Oceania Sevens Championship and we had two weeks of preparation.”

She is urging the people of Fiji to support the team.

Coach Iliesa Tanivula said despite being in a tough pool, they are determined to play their A-game

“We got a tough pool being placed with two strong teams Ireland and Canada who is ranked third and we are in fourth,” he said.

“As always we want to get into the top four so after last season’s performance we have worked on some areas of our play.

“We need to be on our A-game and in every tournament we go into we will want to learn and improve. This is in preparations towards the Rugby Sevens World Cup in San Francisco and Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia   next year.”
