A submission was held yesterday by the Department of Energy on the Management of Rural Electrification Programme – Audit Report on Performance Audit Volume 1 – December, 2014 to the Public Accounts Committee.

Acting Assistant Director Energy Mikaele Belena says it was two years ago that under the budget, public contribution to pay for rural electrification was removed.

Mr Belena said it was in 2016 that every community contribution would be paid by Government and whatever funds had been paid were refunded to these communities.

Mr Belena said the installation work for the grid extensions would follow tender processes, which were competitive.

“We also prioritise those who have paid contribution earlier and those who are first on the list of payments,” he said

He added that the Department looked into solar home systems for remote and outer islands not connected to the grid, those who were with diesel generator systems and assisted communities that require system to be connected to the Fiji Electricity Authority (FEA) grid lines.

He said at the moment a new project they were looking into is a hybrid system where there was a combination of two power supplies which could be diesel generator or solar or both renewable energy sources.

He said the project was to help address the needs of the communities in-terms of environment and sustainable power supply and addressing the issue of emissions of carbon-dioxide.
