Commissioner of Police Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho and the Fiji Police Force were acknowledged for their thorough presentation before the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defence yesterday.

Brigadier-General Qiliho and the Chief Administration Officer Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Itendra Nair made submissions on the ‘Public Petition for Parliament to Review and Redress the Vast Anomaly Present in the Recent Police Back – Pay Out of 2015’.

Brigadier-General Qiliho said it was the first time that the Fiji Police Force had some form of salary progression system which used to be non-existent.

He said under his powers and under the Constitution, they looked into the Pro-Rata System and submitted it to Government which was approved.

“I set those guidelines which includes qualification and the fitness part; pass that and go on to the salary progression. It is not different for Police Forces around the world. It is a common practice and something new that we are going through, to qualify in certain courses and have a qualifying period of time to be on that rank.”

He said in past systems when a Police officer was promoted to sergeant, he would have that rank for 30 years and sat on the fixed salary.

Someone who would come in and get promoted today, would also sit on the same salary scale.

“We brought in that fair system and we thank Government for approving this and that is why that budget was provided; so that we could go through that system, and it was gazetted and we are going through that process now.”

Member of Parliament Jijilia Kumar acknowledged the contribution and the queries of the committee which were answered.

She thanked the Commissioner of Police for the new payment of progression system introduced in the Police force.

“I believe this was a problem, that the Police officers faced when they are promoted to the next level to those who just came in, they still share the same level of wages.

“And I am sure, because I received the same complaints from the nurses and the nursing sisters in hospitals and I hope that this kind of payment progression system will be implemented by other ministries such as health. This is a very good payment system,” she said.
