Baber warns players despite 50-7 win

Concentration and communication is what Fiji Airways Fijian 7s head coach Gareth Baber is driving to the players during the Dubai 7s yesterday.

Baber stressed its importance during their pool opener against Russia where they allowed them to hit back with a try after enjoying a comfortable 26-0 lead.

“You need to concentrate,” Baber said.

“You lost the kick-off, made a mistake and allowed them to score. You need to talanoa (communicate).”

The Fijians ran in four quick tries to prop Mesulame Kunavula, Captain Seremaia Tuwai, Waisea Nacuqu and Kalione Nasoko with Vatemo Ravouvou kicking in three conversions.

In the second spell Tuwai ran in his second try before John Stewart dotted their sixth try.

Rookie forward Apenisa Cakaubalavu and Eroni Sau scored their first try in the Series with Ravouvou’s conversions sealing a 50-7 win.

Baber said despite the big win they’re wary of their second pool opponent Wales.

“Wales can hurt us if we’re not careful. At the moment we’re at the rebirth of Fijian sevens with the young boys coming in to fill the spaces left by those that have left. This is also in our leadership as well. This is a good start but as a coach we’re not always satisfied,” Baber added.
