It was a routine lunch outing for taxi driver Vashnil Ram, 27, and his wife Ashika, but they found themselves in the middle of a high speed Police car chase drama involving an alleged hit-and-run case.

The couple were on their way out of Thurston Gardens in Suva around 1.45pm when the alleged suspect in his four-wheel drive  rushed down Ratu Cakobau Road, going towards Albert Park Pavilion and Grounds, and narrowly missed hitting the couple’s vehicle.

Mr Ram said the incident happened within a few seconds and it was frightening for them.

“My wife and I were in our vehicle when we saw one Pajero rush past. I looked outside to see the road clear and I was about to exit the Thurston Gardens when the vehicle approached, at a very high speed. I narrowly missed hitting the vehicle.

“I followed the vehicle to help other drivers catch him. It was like if someone was playing a video game and he was speeding. After him other taxi drivers and Police tried to chase him,” Mr Ram said.

He said the alleged suspect had hit many vehicles and turned into many streets as he tried to avoid capture.

“The chase came to end at the Richards Road in Domain, Suva where the driver was arrested and taken to the Police station,” Mr Ram said.
