EDITORIAL: Celebrate Jesus Christ, The Reason For The Season, By Helping Others

Jesus Christ the spirit of love and compassion will give us joy when we help people.

The launch of Light the World this Christmas, a programme of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has a universal ring to it.

It is for everyone, who is in a position to help those in need. It requires us individually to do 25 acts of service and compassion building up to Christmas.

That’s an average of one a day.

Christmas will be more meaningful when we engage ourselves in good works like helping the poor, the needy, the vulnerable, the sick and the afflicted.

This is what he whose birth we celebrate would love us to do. Jesus Christ was born to serve a mission.

He was sent by God our Father in Heaven to save mankind so that all people if they choose right would return to live with him in heaven after this mortal life.

James, echoing the words of God in the New Testament of the Holy Bible, said pure religion and undefiled before God is to visit the fatherless, the widows and the poor,

There are many people in desperate need of help this Christmas. We need to reach out and help them.

The needs vary and may include;

Those who are lonely and in emotional distress

Those who have no money, no food and no home

Those who are sick or otherwise afflicted

 The elderly and disabled

The orphans, widows and widowers

And the charitable organisations that look after some of the above.

One of the best sources of happiness is giving of your time and resources to help those in need.

To those who are blessed with abundance this is a good opportunity to make a difference in the lives of our fellow citizens and because you are doing it you will be blessed. That’s the promise from Jesus Christ .

If he was here in person he would have led this crusade of compassion and love himself.

The outpouring of his spirit at this time every year is testimony of his power and majesty.

People from different faiths celebrate Christmas because of its message of love and hope. He said through his anointed in the Bible that out of faith, hope and charity, the biggest of these is charity. He said in Matthew 11:28-30;

28: “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

29: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

30: “For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

He is the source of happiness and all things good. No other person has done what he did. He gave his life that we might be saved, he paid the ultimate price.

If we Help people for the next 25 days we will find joy and happiness.
