Four members of the Japan Sailing Foundation conducted a week-long clinic with the Fiji Yachting Association at the National Sailing Centre in Laucala Bay, Suva.

The clinic was part of the “Sport for Tomorrow” programme. This was an initiative by the Japanese government to promote sport to more than 10 million people in over 100 nations until 2020 where Tokyo will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The programme aims to deliver values of sport and promote the Olympic and Paralympic movement to people of all generations worldwide.

The Japanese team include Takao Otani (World Sailing Council), Maiko Sato (Fukuoka Sailing Federation) and Olympian from Sydney Olympics Tetsuo Watanabe, former national Sailing team member and Dongyoon Lee.

“It was a fun week-long event and I could see by the end of the programme the young sailors are getting better,” Sato said.

“We conducted this clinic for six local sailors among which one will be leaving for China on Monday to represent Fiji in the Youth Sailing World Championship.

“I hope the sailors continue with their usual training and give their best in the upcoming international champs.

”We are looking forward to conduct more clinics in Fiji and impart our experience and knowledge in trying to expand the sport here.”

Fiji Sailing coach Pato Jamardo was grateful with the Japanese assistance.
