Sereana Rainima said the camp also focused on how youths can improve their lives and ways to tackle issues surrounding them.

Seventeen-year-old Sereana Rainima believes that a camp she has been attending since 14 has shaped her character and helped her in her spiritual faith.

Sereana is part of a three-day annual camp organised by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from the Nausori Fiji Stake Youth.

The camp this year which began on Thursday is held at Adi Cakobau School, Sawani.

“It has assisted me to know my peers well and build a strong faith,” she said.

“My parents always stressed the importance of coming to the camp since it helps mould my character.

“As I came through over the years, I have learnt the importance of having a safe space. And this camp is a safe space where people of the same belief are able to express their views and concerns about life.

“Especially during these troubled times, we are going through the festive season, and it is important that we are intact with our values and standards.”

Camp counsellor Tieri Fatiaki said that was exactly what the camp was for and more.

“They are here to be reminded of their roles in society as it is part of the church to administer simple issues,” Ms Fatiaki said.

She said the camp also focused on how youths can improve their lives and ways to tackle issues surrounding them.

“There is always a need to improve their way of thinking so they can be confident, choose colourful careers, and their spiritual mindset as well,” Ms Fatiaki said.

Sereana said: “Before I was a very spoiled and angry child, and I always expected things to be done on my way. I didn’t have a very good attitude.

“This camp has made me see the bigger picture. I have learnt to be considerate of people, and meeting people from different background and personalities.”
