Former Fiji Airways Flying Fijians lock forward Sekonaia Kalou married sweetheart Margaret Mary Steven at Navisabasaba, Nadroga yesterday.

The two exchanged vows in front of friends and relatives at Naivisabasaba Methodist Church.

“It is time for me now. She has been my strength on and off the field,” he said.

Kalou, a former Nadroga skipper in the local provincial rugby plays for Waverley Harvesting Border in Wanganui, New Zealand.

“I got few more years to go. But there are more greater things in life with family is one of them.”

They met in 2012 at Twickenham Stadium in London after the Fiji-England test match.

“That’s when we first met but we started dating in January 2014,” he said.

Margaret’s dad is from England while her mum hails from Motusa, Rotuma.

She was born in Suva and attended Lomary Primary School when they lived in Deuba. Margaret later attended Adi Cakobau School from Year Seven to Year 10.

She moved to England when she was in Year 10. She is a registered nurse.

“I am excited,” she said.

“I have always supported him. We maintained a long distance relationship because of his rugby career and I will support him.”

On January 25 when they were on holiday in Fiji, Kalou proposed to her

“I think it was easy for him to ask.  When he proposed he was very honest and it was a pleasant surprise,” she said.

Kalou played for North Otago in 2005-2006, Otago Rugby in 2007– 2010.

He made his test debut for Fiji in 2010 against Australia.

He featured in the 2010 Pacific Nations Cup and the highlight of his career was being selected for the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

Kalou also played for the national sevens team before moving to France and Italy.

Margaret departs for England on December 8  while Kalou will spend Christmas at home before returning to his club in New Zealand.

The newlyweds plan to settle in England.
