For the first time in 20 years, Fiji have beaten Pacific’s number one New Caledonia 2-1 in day two of the team’s event in tennis during the 2017 Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu yesterday.

Fiji won the first set 6-1 but New Caledonia managed to come back in the second set winning 6-2. Fiji won the last set 6-4.

Coach Robert Krause said while the win is historic for the team, they need to keep their feet on the ground.

“Someone told me that it was the first time in like 20 years that we beat New Caledonia but for us it is not so much of a big deal. We look at it as another match because it is only pool play,” Krause said.

“We are not anywhere near to the medal stage yet even though we have now qualified for the medal stage.

“What I have always tried to tell these boys from a year ago is that if you play the Asian Games, Mini Games, pool matches or even medal matches I just want them to play, do not worry about who you are going up against or anything, I just tell them to play.

“The boys are in a good place right now mentally and I do not want them to start thinking they are like the number one in the Pacific and let the win get to their head.”
