A parade through the main street of Nadi yesterday marked the start of the Miss South Pacific Islands Pageant 2017.

Fiji is hosting the pageant for the second time with contestants from nine Pacific Island Countries advocating on the theme Climate Action to Sustain our Islands.

In his official address at Prince Charles Park, newly-appointed Miss Pacific Islands Pageant Board chairperson Hirdesh Prasad said this year’s pageant is aligned in order to meet expectations of the Pageant Board.

“We have been in consultation with the Pacific Islands Secretariat to ensure that we align to the guideline to what is expected of us to host this pageant,” he said.

“I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant Board of Secretariat for their assistance throughout the year.”

He added that in collaboration with the Government’s initiative towards climate change, through this pageant they will be able to raise more awareness on the cause.

“The theme this year Climate Action to Sustain our Islands was chosen in support of the national Government’s COP 23 work,” Mr Prasad added.

“We all need to do our part in supporting the Government’s campaign to intensify the awareness and making the change to save our environment.”

Also speaking during the opening, Nadi Town Council special administrator Robin Ali, thanked the corporate sponsors for their contestant support through the preparations.

“I would like to briefly share with how privileged we are to have you here and we hope during your time with us that you will enjoy your stay,” he said.

“Sincere appreciation to the sponsors despite the challenges your invaluable support will be rewarded you have committed to serve with us in the national interest.

“We have collaborated as a team and it is because we are united that we can deliver this platform for the festival and the pageant.”

The official opening was held last night where they had their sarong judging and stage interviews.
