Fiji Football Association technical director Ravinesh Kumar has called on parents, families and friends of players taking part in the Fiji Cup to come out in numbers to show their support.

Kumar said it was disappointing to see a low turnout during the opening ceremony on Monday.

“To be honest about 20 percent of the parents whose children were taking part turned up and it’s disappointing,” he said.

“ The parents usually are committed to work and other stuff but it was a public holiday but still the turnout was low. We asked some players and they said that their parents could not come as they were home sleeping. This is not right as the children need the support from their families.”

Kumar said for players to perform to the next level they need the support of their family.

The former school teacher said the Fiji Cup tournament has progressed compared to previous years.

“The competition has come a long way and is growing. Next year we are looking at inviting our other regional countries and also introduce the under-10 category.

“So we are moving in the right direction as far as grassroots development is concerned. The OFC under-16 and under-19 competitions will be held next year. The first phase of selection was the Youth League’s from which the elite players are picked. This is the second phase as coaches will monitor the players and discuss with the national coach when he returns. The third phase begins early next year.”
