The acting Prime Minister and Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Mereseini Vuniwaqa yesterday received a $40,000 cheque from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Fiji to assist the ministry with the procurement of mobility aid devices.

This was the result of a prior meeting that the Embassy had with the ministry, with discussions around the five core groups of disadvantaged Fijians that the ministry looks after and the challenges they generally face.

One major area that the two parties found needed urgent attention was the scarce accessibility of mobility aid to cater for the needs of elderly persons and persons living with disabilities. The $40,000 donation is specifically for the Ministry to obtain adequate mobility resources to assist people who fall in two categories.

Last year the Embassy had also donated a laptop and a desktop computer to the Mahaffy Girls Home and some equipment for the Senior Citizens Home as well.

Charge d’Affaire, HE Counsellor Gu Yu said that the donation is a continuation of the Government of the People’s Republic of China support to the work of the Ministry which in the past has seen the supply of sewing machines and fabrics for women’s groups.

Ms Vuniwaqa and Counsellor Gu Yu also discussed the possibility of further assistance and support by the  government of the People’s Republic of China towards sustainable income generating projects for the empowerment of women and alleviation of poverty in Fiji.

Counsellor Gu Yu said that the  government of the People’s Republic of China will continue to support the Ministry financially and in kind which will assist the people of Fiji.

Ms Vuniwaqa thanked the Government of China for the tremedous assistance they have been giving the Ministry and Fiji and reassured that the Ministry will continue to work closely with the Embassy in its future endeavours.
