What an inspiration that a mother of two can bring to young women who have faced challenges during their education.

For Taletoka Valemei, 24, she went through a lot yet got herself together, and built up the courage to complete her Fiji Year 13 Examinations five years later.

Imagine the fear she must have felt back in 2012, when she found out she was pregnant before sitting for her external examinations.

Hats off to you, Ms Valemei, for having the courage to return to school, for believing in yourself and being a good example to our young Fijians.

When a young woman, below the age of 21 whether in a high school or tertiary institution notices the signs of pregnancy, she starts to panic.

Many thoughts start to cloud her better judgement, she thinks of the reactions of her family, relatives, and others she interacts with on a daily or regular basis.

It’s scary to be in this situation. It also brings thoughts of shame for many parents, especially if they have had such high hopes for their loved ones.

But life is too short to be thinking of ‘I should have done this’ or ‘I shouldn’t have’. It’s about rising up and moving on.

And on this note, we thank the Valemei family for speaking words of encouragement and having faith in their daughter and sister.

Yes it took her some time to return to school, but what matters is not how fast you complete a task, it’s how well you’ve done it.

Renowned American media proprietor, talk show host, actress, producer, and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey in one of her famous quotes said: ‘Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher’.

And that is exactly what Ms Valemei did. Her family has always stuck by her and remained her pillar of strength.

She faced a lot of problems during her marriage, but then whose marriage is perfect?

And if this young woman can do it, anyone, any woman can!

It takes courage for a young woman to face up to the challenge while also fulfilling her responsibilities to her young family.
