More than 800 people flocked to Korovatu Beach in Labasa to spend their Christmas day.

The beach is one of the popular picnic spot members of the public usually go to during holidays over the years.

Taraivini Lesi of Qamea Island was with her family spending time on the beach, watching over her grandchildren play in the water.

“My son-in-law, Esala Rabuka, originally from Drekeniwai Village in Cakaudrove Province and now residing at Vunivau, Labasa decided to do something different,” Ms Lesi said.

“We moved from the trend of travelling down to the village to come together as a family to the beach away from home to celebrate Christmas.

“It’s good to try this different arrangement to get the family together.”

The 76-year-old grandmother said the 14-member family arrived at the beach in three vehicles.

Another family member Emosi Tolevu, 27, an employee of Taiwan Timber said he travelled from Dreketi to celebrate Christmas with his loved ones.

The business partners of In Fashion (clothing business in Labasa) were also at the beach with their families who came from Suva.

Korovatu Beach is a family business managed by Rishi Chand, who said from January 1, 2018 a sign board would be placed at the entrance since the lease has been bought by a foreign investor.

“The man is from Christchurch in New Zealand and he bought a 30-year lease,” said Mr Chand who is a rice and sugarcane farmer said.

“The new owner plans to upgrade the picnic spot and build a hotel next year. This will mean the image of this favourite picnic spot and operation will be changed.”
