The Office of the President and members of the disciplined forces yesterday hosted a surprise afternoon tea for President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote to celebrate his 70th birthday.

Also present at the event at Borron House was the Chief Justice Justice Anthony Gates, Cabinet Ministers, close friends and family members of President Konrote. Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander, Rear-Admiral Viliame Naupoto wished President Konrote well on behalf of the dignitaries present.

President Konrote acknowledged the surprise reception held in his honour, and thanked Government for its achievements this year including successfully presiding over the climate change negotiations as President of COP23. Rear-Admiral Naupoto also presented President Konrote with a ‘lali’ as a token of appreciation.

The ‘lali’ was carved from a Mahogany tree that was growing in the presidential compound in Suva but was uprooted by Tropical Cyclone Winston.

The President had been gifting similar ‘lalis’ to various dignitaries around the world. The gifts are a reminder of climate change, of Fiji’s presidency of COP23 and of her call to world leaders to collectively and decisively address climate change for the sake of humanity.
