The National Fire Authority (NFA) staff on Friday farewelled three veteran firefighters whose service amassed a total of 85 years of service.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer John Pillay is retiring from the NFA with 37 years of service, Divisional Fire Officer Western Gopal Reddy has served for 26 years and Leading Firefighter Savenaca Tabualevu is retiring after 22 years of service with the NFA.

The farewell was held at the Nadi Fire Station and the trio will be officially retiring from the authority today after reaching the retirement age of 55 this year.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Mileta Seniroqa during the farewell ceremony thanked the three firefighters for their hard work and service to the nation.

“These fire officers have played a very important role in the fire service and the implementation of the reforms of the National Fire Authority to-date,” Mrs Seniroqa said.

“The three officers retiring today have faithfully served in this profession for more than 20-years and I can only admire them for their loyalty and passion for the firefighting profession.”

Leading Firefighter Savenaca Tabualevu was a Volunteer Firefighter in 1993 in Nadi and then confirmed in the National Fire Authority in 1995. Mr Gopal Reddy started his firefighting career with the Council Fire Service in 1991 and he has served 22 years of service with NFA.

“Mr Reddy has been a senior officer since 2006 when he started acting in the position of STO Nadi and later confirmed in that position in 2009,” Mrs Seniroqa said.

“He was then given the opportunity to act as Divisional Fire Officer West in 2011 until confirmation of his promotion in 2015.”

Ms Seniroqa said Mr Pillay played a critical role for the NFA.

“Mr Pillay has been a critical part of the NFA as he has been very instrumental in NFA’s journey that started in 1995 when NFA first started its operation, taking over the fire service in the country from municipalities and councils.

“I must acknowledge the support of the spouses and families of each of these officers which has enabled them to carry out their work faithfully,” Ms Seniroqa said.
