A below par turnout to the street party did not dampened the spirit of Ba Town Council chief executive officer Dip Narayan who is optimistic of a good 2018 for ratepayers of the western town.

While the numbers at the event was not what he expected the celebration went ahead and was more about bidding farewell to 2017 and welcoming 2018 with the challenges the new year will bring.

“This event has been held for the past five years and despite the hurdles we went through last year we are prepared to take on 2018 with more developments and projects set in place,” Mr Narayan said.

“As indicated by the attendance today, no matter how far the distance or the difficulty people still have made their way here, which is appreciated.

“Usually we have more than 3000 people attending, but this year we understand that it falls on a Sunday to Monday so many people would have gone to their respective churches. I’m still pleased with the number of people who did make the effort to attend.

“We celebrated the beginning of the New Year in Ba as a way of bringing people together to enjoy themselves.”

Last year Ba Town Council did not host a street party because of the effects caused by Tropical Cyclone Winston. First timers to the Ba street party, Anit Kumar and wife Hannah Kumar shared their experience.

“My wife has never been to any party such as this, so I thought it would be good for us to see they entertainment, lights, music and just experience how we in Ba celebrate the New Year,” Mr Kumar said.

“For our New Year’s resolution we are looking forward to being parents and to be the best at it. At the same time we wish everyone happy New Year and a prosperous one.”

The couple are looking forward to the birth of their first child.
