A Romanian national appeared before the Nadi Magistrate Court yesterday charged with one count of failing to declare foreign currencies amounting to $FJ34,530.07.

The court heard that on December 30, 2017, Dragosalin Popesco, 27, had allegedly failed to declare the amount upon arrival at the Nadi International Airport.

He appeared before Magistrate Seromi Turaga and pleaded guilty to the charges.

The court heard that he had arrived on a flight from Sydney with a four months business visa. Popesco said he was a private businessman who loved travelling.

He told the court that he had given the handbag in which the money was in to customs officers when requested at Nadi Airport.

Popesco then told the court he was used to travelling with an amount of $US10,000 ($FJ20,379) during vacations around the world.

The court heard that he couldn’t fill the declaration forms while on his way to Fiji due to turbulences on the plane and that he was overwhelmed with the Fijian hospitality upon arrival. This distracted him.

The matter has been adjourned to January 4 and he was remanded at the Natabua Corrections Centre.
