New Year’s Day celebrations turned into tragedy for a family when their home was razed in a fire early yesterday in Nakasi.

The fire started around 2am in a wooden house where the family of three was renting a bottom flat and the landlord lived upstairs.

Tenants, Wati and John Morrell, had left home on Sunday to visit relatives in Lami and the landlord was in Australia when the incident occurred.

Ms Morrell has lived in the flat for over a year. She had previously complained to the Landlord about electrical faults, unfortunately her plea fell on deaf ears.

Unaware that their home was destroyed in a fire they came home on Monday to pick some clothes and saw their house completely burned down.

“Coming down the driveway, we could not see the roof of the house. Everything we worked for have turned into ashes,” Ms Morrell said.

“My husband works in Sydney and has to go back soon, but his passports and everything is burned in the fire.

“There were some electrical faults in the house and I suspect this was the cause of the fire.

“We lodged numerous complaints to our landlord to get the electrical wiring repaired. I never imagined we would lose everything like this.”

Witness Jack Samisoni, 23, said he was in bed when he heard from his sister that Ms Morrell’s windows broke.

“I got up thinking it might be a thief trying to get into the house to steal, but when I went outside, I saw the house up in flames,” Mr Samisoni said.

Ms Morrell estimated the cost of damage at $15,000 because some items were still on hire purchase and some from overseas.

There was also a house fire in Raiwaqa, Suva, yesterday morning, Police said, but no one was hurt.
