Fiji’s lone medallist at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games Apolonia Vaivai aims to go a level up in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast on April 4-15.

The Tavuki, Taveuni native will be competing in the women’s 69kg category. Vaivai was the lone Fijian athlete that won bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in the 75kg.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday Vaivai said she confident of a golden performance.

“After my performance in the 2014 Commonwealth Games I believe I can battle with world champions in the sport,”Vaivai said.

“I’m ready to go one step up from 2014 and winning gold tops my list.”

Vaivai celebrated Christmas with her family in Tavuki, Taveuni but returned to training in the New Yeary.

“Right now celebration is not on my list as I got three months to prepare for Gold Coast; I prefer to sacrifice now and to do my family and country proud come April.

“I want to thank my family for their support, my friends and Weightlifting Fiji family for continuously striving for success in the sporting field.”

Vaivai participated at the 2017 Pacific Mini Games in Vanuatu last month and won three gold medals in the women’s 75Kg weight category. She lifted 95Kg in the snatch to win gold and also set a new Pacific Games record for the snatch.

In the Clean and Jerk she secured gold with her opening lift of 110Kg. She had a total lift of 205kg.
