The Land Transport Authority has confirmed it will conduct a barrel draw when awarding taxi permits after the freeze was lifted on January 1 this year.

This is to ensure transparency in the selection process.

For example, if 100 applications qualified for a zone but only 10 permits are available, the names of  all applicants will be put into a barrel then 10 names will be picked from the barrel.

In a statement, the authority said its team was able to identify zones after undertaking a feasibility study on population, road and transportation.

There are 5461 taxis operating around the country.

The authority has considered the issue of traffic congestions in the 13 zone areas identified.

Accordingly it has established the taxi quotas for each zones and reasonable quota for taxi permits will be issued for each transport zone.

Based on its findings of the number of taxis available in every area, the LTA calculated the taxi quotas and then allocated the number to taxi permits to be awarded in each zone.

The authority stated that further adjustment would be made after the release of 2017 census figures which will be released this week.

As for comprehensive insurance cover it will be a matter between a vehicle owner and the insurance company whether or not the company will issue a cover, but in so far as compulsory third party cover is concerned, the authority will issue cover for all vehicles with valid wheel tax registration.

The authority will only register the sale and process the transfer of permits according to our legislated process.

New law amendments require the authority to register the sale through a bona fide agreement to be submitted while applying for a permit transfer under ‘sale and purchase’.

The sale and purchase price is between the seller and buyer.
