The Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) aims to certify all their coaches and referees in a bid to improve the standard of the local competition.

FNRL chief executive officer Timoci Naleba said this is in-line with their 10-year development programme that began in 2016 and would be in fruition by the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

“We want our coaches and officials to work and meet the requirements and standards of FNRL, from club level all the way to provincial level,” Naleba said.

He pointed out that this would also lift the standard of play for the local based- players as they’ve improved on their skills.

Naleba highlighted that they received lots of complaints regarding some decisions made by match officials during their weekly competition.

“This will also help match officials to make sound and accurate decisions during games. This is crucial so coaches and players efforts in training during the week does not go to waste by poor refereeing on Saturdays.”

He said they would be accrediting their officials with the necessary qualifications to ensure the smooth running of their competition. “This should contribute to the performance and improvement in each team’s training programmes and more importantly the safeguarding of their players’ welfare,” he added.
