The body of a 23-year-old groundsman from a resort in Lautoka was found in a mangrove swamp yesterday.

Ratu Jope Sigaruarua, an employee of First Landing Resort in Veiseisei, is the latest drowning victim in the country.

He went missing while swimming in the Dreketi River in Saweni on Tuesday evening.

His body was found by a search team comprising divers from the resort and members of the local community.

His uncle and former Parliamentarian Ratu Isoa Tikoca said the family was shocked when the tragic news reached them.

“We heard of the incident at about 10.30am.  Police arrived half an hour later to conduct investigations,” Ratu Isoa said.

He confirmed the search was conducted by some people in the area, resort divers, helpers from the All Nations Church and Shalmart crew divers

Akili Ruitoka, 25, from nearby Lauwaki Village was in the search party who helped locate the body.

He told this newspaper that they found the body stuck in a nearby mangrove swamp.

Meanwhile, police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the body was that of Ratu Jope.

She said that a post-mortem examination would be carried out to ascertain the cause of death.
