The Japanese sports car was sleek, sexy and functional, and more so now with the recent launch of its fastback version, the Miata RF

It looks like we’re not the only ones to get the MX-5 RF’s charm, as the Red Dot Design Awards have bestowed it with the prestigious “Best of the Best” honours. The title is the most coveted award available from the annual competition, and this isn’t the first time the current-gen Miata’s won it as the soft top model did the same in 2015.

“With the MX-5 RF, Mazda has truly come up with a timeless sports car design that is worthy of praise and admiration.” The executive also added that the RF’s hardtop further emphasizes the soft top version’s stunning Kodo Design looks.

This is the sixth honours which Mazda has received from the Red Dot design awards over the years. The Mazda CX-3 and Mazda 2 won awards in 2015 alongside the MX-5 convertible, while the Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 received honors in 2014 and 2013 respectively.

A panel made up of 40 experts from around the globe assembled to decide the winners of the 2017 Red Dot awards in 47 categories, which included cars and motorcycles. Jurors can be from any industrial manufacturing company, although they cannot participate in a vote where products they may have been involved with are contenders.

The first fastback interpretation of KODO, the RF features a one-of-a-kind lightweight power retractable hardtop and in a remarkable display of origami, opens and closes in just 13 seconds. Adding coupé practicality to the MX-5’s open-top driving fun, the RF deepens the overall experience. The MX-5 has been a best-selling two-seater sports car in its segment.
