Fiji’s very own Dolphin Island was voted the Best Private Island by Traveller, an essential travelling resource for Australians.

The tiny private island, situated 142km away from Suva, is located in the remote northern part of Viti Levu.

On September 21 last year, the island had completed its final stage of restoration after Tropical Cyclone Winston affected the region in 2016.

The Huka Retreats general manager Kerry Molloy said: “As Dolphin Island is in a relatively remote area, we have had to work hard to promote it through a series of press and trade visits to spread the word globally.

“Making the Traveller list means many Australians now know about it, and this is an important market for us.

“We are really heartened by this acknowledgment of Dawn Simpson [manager of Dolphin island] and our fantastic, hard-working team on Dolphin Island who make it what it is.”

Although business at the moment is slow because of the interruption caused by Cyclone Winston, Ms Molloy remains positive and says there is now a lot more interest that have translated into bookings.

As for this year’s plans, she said, “We would like to consolidate global attention by sustaining media interest and developing key industry relationships.

“Dolphin Island is special because it captures the essence of the real Fiji, where life on the island is as simple or indulgent as guests like it to be.

“With no other guests other than your own partner, family or friends, it’s your own private haven far from the pressure of everyday life.”

Dolphin Island is not like other ‘private islands’ where there are other guests.

It is for exclusive use for guests to celebrate the simplicity of the real Fiji, to dine on fresh seafood off the beach as you want, to lie in a hammock and read all afternoon, or to sleep in the outdoor bure and watch the sunrise over the Pacific.
