InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort and Spa is joining forces with other stakeholders to help keep a picnic spot at Natadola, in Nadroga, clean and attractive.

This is in line with the Government’s drive under the COP 23 initiative towards environment sustainability.

The resort’s employee relations and corporate responsibility manager, Jacob Pauu, who is spearheading the programme, said it was part of the hotel’s community social responsibility.

The resort’s efforts are two-pronged: Corporate environment sustainability and community sustainability projects.

“A lot of rubbish is left over by the public after their picnics. The whole idea is to prevent rubbish being thrown into the ocean. Rubbish must be placed in the skip bins,” Mr Pauu said.

He said the resort has allocated three skip bins at Sanasana village and two at Natadola beach.

“This started three weeks ago. We will continue to go on with a major clean up campaign set for January 19. The resort staff will combine with students from Malomalo Primary School and Rahmatullah Khan Memorial School to clean up the Natadola picnic area,” Mr Pauu said.

“The resort is responsible to clear the bins at the Sigatoka rubbish dump once confirmed full. This is to create awareness that all rubbish must be placed into these bins and not into the area.”

Recently the resort awarded monetary prizes to the three Sanasana village section leaders for the most clean village section competition.

Meanwhile, the resort has resumed another community-related project – the construction of a 100-metre greenhouse project in conjunction with Ministry of Agriculture.

The project entails farm production from planting of seeds to helping farmers to sell their produce.

The resort invested $4000 in the farming project.
