The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is planning to include the Skipper Provincial 10s tournament in to their annual calendar.

This was confirmed to SUN sports yesterday by FRU chief executive officer John O’Connor.

“We’re planning to include the tournament into our annual calendar as this will provide an opportunity to local players in terms of having a development pathway being created for them,” O’Connor said.

He was pleased with how teams prepared for the tournament, which was an indication that they welcome the 10s concept.

“It compliments their off-season training and also allows players game time before heading into the Skipper Cup competition.”

Fiji Airways Fijian 7s head coach Gareth Baber said the tournament is a good platform for preparing players not only for the Skipper Cup but for the 7s duties as well.

“I’m always looking for players whether it’s at the beach or in competitions like these. I’m always on a look-out,” Baber said.

Then he added that it was always good to have a format that is not 15s but a bit closer to the 7s game like the 10s competition.

“I think it will be a great idea, to include it into the FRU annual calendar as it will be good for the game,” he added.
