Twenty years of memories went up in smoke when a family living on Nawaka Tramline Rd lost their double-storey home in a fire.

The fire on Friday at around 11pm has left three people homeless.

The property, Akbar Leeds Store, belongs to Monsoor Ali, a 58-year-old businessman who also lived in the building.

Musrat Ali, the daughter of Mr Ali, said it was heartbreaking as the fire claimed over 20 years of family memories.

She said they were attending a wedding when the incident happened. Her father, who had one leg amputated was able to escape the inferno.

“We are grateful to be alive but at the same time saddened that we have lost 20 years of our memories with the home,” Ms Ali said.

“We are now living with relatives and friends and I thank all those who have come forward and supported us during this time.”

Police Spokesperson Ana Naisoro said Mr Ali was alone at home and smelt smoke coming from the ground floor.”

Cost of damage is estimated at $500,000. The National Fire Authority is investigating the cause of the fire.

The authority said they had deployed two fire trucks to the scene and Police officers from Namaka and Nadi police stations were also present to ensure public safety and control traffic flow.
