The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation yesterday visited the brush cutter and canteen income generating projects run by women groups in Nadakuni and Naqara villages in Naitasiri.

During these visits, Ms Vuniwaqa also handed over sewing machines to the women’s groups, which they had requested from the ministry to diversify their businesses.

While visiting the business projects, the minister said the income generating projects would strengthen the commitment between the ministry and women’s groups in working together for the empowerment of rural women.

She also acknowledged the support shown by the men and ‘vanua’ towards the aspirations and work of the women in the villages.

“The ministry is happy to provide income generating projects to registered women’s group in Fiji to alleviate poverty by economically empowering women,” Ms Vuniwaqa said.

The president of the Naqara Women’s Group, Timaima Vakadragusu, acknowledged the minister for visiting them. The vice-president of Nadakuni Women’s Group, Melaia Duacakau, shared similar sentiments and said that they were happy to have Ms Vuniwaqa visit them and share words of encouragement on how to operate their income generating projects.

She also thanked the ministry for handing over the sewing machines to them.

“We will sew clothes and uniforms so we can sell it and the money earned will assist the operation of our women’s group,” Ms Duacakau said.

Ms Vuniwaqa and her team of senior officials will continue their visits in Naitasiri for the rest of the week. The objective is to understand their challenges in sustaining income generating projects, handing over of new projects and Zero Tolerance Violence Free Community initiatives.
