The Cakaudrove Rugby Union has worked together with the Roko Tui Cakaudrove, Police and various Tikina’s to set up a long term development plan for the province.

The plan aims to encourage and support local rugby competitions within villages throughout the province and will culminate in a Super Rugby competition comprising of teams from a combination of Tikina’s across Cakaudrove.

CRU head coach, Rayne Simpson is excited about the prospect of seeing players in action within the Super Rugby competition as this is the first time in many years where the entire vanua has been united to support the development of rugby.|

“It is critical that we engage all tikina’s across Cakaudrove in order to provide an opportunity for young men to participate within rugby programmes,” he said.

“And be able to select the best talent for the CRU teams competing within the Vodafone Vanua Championship.”

Simpson also added that “our vision is for Cakaudrove to compete as one vanua – united in development and performance for the benefit of all rugby participants within the province”.

The 2018 CRU rugby programme kicks off with the Super Rugby competition on Friday, February 16 at Ratu Ganilau Park in Savusavu, where four franchises representing each of the Tikina’s of Cakaudrove will compete.

“This will serve as a selection process for players who will then have an opportunity to be selected into the Cakaudrove provincial squad for the 2018 season.” Simpson said that Super Rugby competition also allows an opportunity to identify and recruit coaches and managers across the senior and U20 teams which is an important element for athlete development.

“Athlete development must also be supported by a strong and educated approach to coach and official’s development. Without good coaches, managers and officials you cannot develop good players”, Simpson said.

The Fiji Rugby Union recently released the draws for the 2018 Vodafone Vanua Championship and CRU will host four games and travel to three away games, with one away game being hosted in Bua.

The finals series commences on July 7. The CRU’s season opening match is on Saturday, April 14 against Naitasiri Bulls at Ratu Ganilau Park, Savusavu, at 1pm with the U20 match followed by the senior match at 3pm. Current news and details of the CRU competition preparations, camps, trial matches, social activities and competition match results can be found on the Cakaudrove Rugby Union’s Facebook group
