A new site for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Naval Division’s base has been identified, but would be revealed at a later date.

The was confirmed to the Fiji Sun by the Navy Commander Captain (Navy) Humphrey Tawake at his office in Walu Bay, Suva.

“I can confirm to you now that we have identified the venue of the new naval base,” he said.

The location of the new site is currently classified.

He said the base would not be moving to Togalevu because they would be using the venue for their recruitment training.

“We will no longer attend basic recruit training at Nasinu,” he said.

In an earlier interview when they were searching for a new base, he said they wanted a base that could cater for three naval vessels and a barge and must be accessible 24 hours. He said the Stanley Brown Base at Walu Bay would be relocated to Togalevu.

Commenting on the Fiji Naval Vessel (FNS) Kikau he said the refitted vessel would be in the country from Australia in late April or early May.

He said 19 crew members would leave the country in April for training in Australia before bringing the FNS Kikau back to Fiji.

Meanwhile, Captain Tawake said the current women navy recruits were doing well in their training and they had increased their intake to 25. He said the women recruits were currently doing administration work.

He also revealed there would be another recruitment drive in October.

He said the new recruits would be trained eventually to be crew members on naval vessels.
